Interval Fitness Training Do you need a little weight loss boost without having to spend more time at the gym?  Try interval training.

What is Interval Training?

Interval training is just alternating bursts of intense exercise with intervals of light activity.  For example, when walking, add in short bursts of faster walking or jogging.  If you are a runner, alternate short bursts of sprinting and jogging.  You can use such things as light posts, mailboxes, or driveways as your interval markers.  So, you could jog 2 light posts, and then sprint 2 light posts, etc.

How Will Interval Training Help You?

First off, no matter what level of fitness you are in, interval training will help you.

  • Interval fitness training will help you burn more calories, thus lose more weight.  The more intense you work out, the more calories you burn, even if you are only increasing your level of activity a few minutes at a time.
  • You’ll bring variety to your workouts.  Instead of doing the same thing all the time, interval training helps mix it up.  And, it brings a little extra challenge to your workouts.
  • You’ll improve your cardiovascular endurance.  The more you start incorporating interval training into your workouts, the longer you’ll be able to exercise the next time.

Some Examples of Interval Fitness Training

  • Walking/Faster walking (outside or treadmill)
  • Walking/Jogging  (outside or treadmill)
  • Slow jog/Running  (outside or treadmill)
  • Running/Sprinting (outside or treadmill)
  • Walk up stairs/Run up stairs  (time it-walk up the stairs for 30 seconds, then run up for 30 seconds)
  • Slow jump rope/Speed up jump rope  (time it-slower speed for 30 seconds, then increase the speed for 30 seconds)
  • Decrease/Increase speed and ramps on the elliptical trainer

It seems a lot of people are skipping breakfast these days.  Everyone is always in a hurry to get out the door in the morning, that they decide to just skip it.  Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  If you skip out on breakfast, you are setting yourself up to eat more later in the day.

Breakfast cereals have become a go to for a quick breakfast.  There is no preparation involved and cereal can be eaten rather quickly.  But, if you are eating sugar laden cereals, you are not doing yourself any good.  Cereal can be a very healthy breakfast, if you choose the right ones.  Here are the healthiest breakfast cereals that are also very tasty.

Kashi Honey Sunshine-Little whole grain corn pillows with a touch of honey; 6 grams of fiber; no artifical sweeteners flavors or preservatives

Kashi Cinnamon Harvest-Organic whole wheat biscuits with organic cinnamon; 5 grams of fiber, 4 grams of protein; only 4 organic ingredients in this cereal

Fiber One Honey Clusters-Great for those that like something a little more sweetened; sucralose is added; 13 grams of fiber, 5 grams of protein, 6 grams of sugar

Kashi Heart to Heart Oat Flakes & Wild Blueberries-Oat flakes with crunch oat clusters, and wild blueberries; 6 natural antioxidants such as green tea and grape seed extract; 4 grams of fiber, 6 grams of protein; 100% daily value of B vitamins and folic acid

Barbara’s Puffins Peanut Butter-For the peanut butter lover; Kosher, wheat and dairy free; natural peanut butter puff pillows; only 2 grams of fiber, but all natural ingredients and great for a change from the usual cereal

Cheerios-Family favorite for years; made from whole grains; no artificial colors or flavors; 3 grams of fiber, 3 grams of protein, good source of folic acid

Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats-8 layers of crunchy whole grain wheat with light frosting; 6 grams of fiber, 6 grams of protein; does contain added sugar and high fructose corn syrup, but a great alternative for kids and those that need something sweeter

Breakfast cereals can be healthy and tasty.  Try one of these today instead of running out the door without breakfast.  Just remember to top the cereal with skim milk!

Which milk really is better for you?  Whole or skim?

It’s skim!  Some people still think that yes, whole milk is more fattening, but it has more calcium and nutrients than skim milk.  That is wrong!

There is no reason to drink whole milk.  It is higher in calories and fat, and actually has slightly less calcium than skim milk.  Let’s take a look at the nutrition facts per 1 cup serving.

Whole Milk

  • 150 calories
  • 8g fat
  • 290 mg calcium

Skim Milk

  • 90 calories
  • .5g fat
  • 316 mg calcium

Both whole milk and skim milk are also excellent sources of protein, phosphorous and potassium.

Switching out whole milk for skim milk will save you a lot of calories and fat, which will help you lose weight.  And, for those of you out there that think you have to use whole milk to cook or bake with-think again!  You can use skim milk for everything you need to make.  I have been using skim milk for years, and have noticed not one difference in the way my meals or baked goods turn out.

So, start making the switch.  If you are currently using whole milk, do not jump right to skim milk.  Switch right now to 2% milk for about a week.  Then, switch down to 1% for about a week.  Then, finally down to skim milk.  It’s just like anything else, it will take a little bit to get used to, but if you stick with it, you WILL get used to it!
