South Beach Diet Details

The South Beach Diet is divided into 3 phases.

South Beach Diet Phase 1

  • 1st phase lasts 2 weeks
  • Phase 1 is designed to eliminate cravings for sugar and refined starches
  • This phase is the strictest and hardest part of the diet
  • You will be eating plenty of healthy, nutrient-dense, and fiber rich foods that will satisfy you
    • lean protein, such as fish, skinless white meat poultry, lean cuts of beef
    • high fiber veggies
    • reduced fat cheeses
    • eggs
    • low fat dairy
    • nuts and seeds
    • avocadoes
    • olive and canola oils
  • Starches, including pasta, rice and bread,  and sugars, including fruits and fruit juices, are eliminated

South Beach Diet Phase 2

  • This is the long term weight loss phase
  • You will eat everything in phase 1, and you will add in healthy carbs and more veggies
    • whole grain bread
    • brown rice
    • whole wheat pasta
    • fruits
    • more veggies
  • You stay on this phase as long as it takes you to reach your weight loss goal

South Beach Diet Phase 3

  • This is the maintenance phase
  • You start this phase once you’ve reached your weight loss goal
  • You continue to follow the principles you learned in Phase 1 & 2, but it allows for more frequent indulgences
  • This is the lifelong stage of the plan
